Brilliant rubber duck favors

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I associated babies with childhood, and I associate childhood with Ernie singing ‘Rubber Duckie You’re the One’ on Sesame Street. It seemed like such a unique idea that I wasn’t sure if there would be enough rubber duck favors around to plan a theme around, but I realized what I started looking into it that the idea was more popular than I had imagined. They are really so cute and it was a lot better than I thought it would be with all the online shopping help I got for ideas. There are a lot of adorable little duck favors and decorations to be found on the internet for baby showers and even toddler birthday parties.
I was holding the shower in my rec room in the basement so I had plenty of room to set up indivdual tables to seat four guests at each. I got a yellow ducky cake with a couple of layers, the bottom one of which said baby girl in red frosting, and then I put that next to plates, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and other deserts; on a table on the other side of the room, I put all of the baby shower presents. Each had a poster or two of Mickey Mouse or one of his friends; the ones of Daffy Duck and Daisy Duck were enormous.
The place card holders I bought and put out at the shower were miniature pink picture frames that had a little ducky in each of the corners. The table settings had duck themed napkins, cup, paper plates, duck candles, and a duck-decorated punch bowl. I set the punch bowl, which was made of glass, inside of a bathtub for a baby that was made to look like a duck; the tub was just something I picked up at a nearby store. When you looked at it, you just wanted to say, ‘aww, how sweet.’ I also bought duck molds and filled them with yellow colored water for duck shaped ice cubes. Believe me, it was the most ducks you’ve ever seen in one place at one time.
Other than a few things that people at school suggested to me, I borrowed most of my ideas from things I saw online. On the Internet is where I found duck shower favors, such as the brilliant baby shower duck favor bookmarkers I found, and the duck candles, too. Everyone thought they were so cute and they made super party gifts for the games we played too.
Before the guests starting arriving I filled a big square container with water and placed little rubber ducks in it. On the bottom of the ducks I wrote numbers and as the guests arrived they each had to pick a duck out of the little pond. We gave out a prize for the person who had the winning number, which I pulled out of a hat a bit later during the shower. Another fun thing we did was when we tried to match each person to a photo of her that was taken when she was a baby. The guests were told in advance to take a baby picture of theirs to the shower with them, and then we put them all on a board and put the board in the front of the room. Everyone looked over the photos and tried to figure out which picture belonged to which person who was present at the shower. The duck baby shower favor went to the one who guessed accurately on the most pictures.
Everyone enjoyed themselves, and the new mommy picked up quite a pile of wonderul presents for her baby girl. I’m so glad I found this idea for the baby shower online. At first I wasn’t too sure about it, but it turned out to be a really great baby shower. The duck theme really was a cute idea.
